The principle of adhesion

Posted June 17, 2024

Just like pressure, tire grip is a crucial factor in the quality of your automotive performance.

What is the adhesion principle?

It’s not just about having new, properly inflated tires. It is also necessary to understand what is happening under the car. Together we will see in detail what grip is, how it changes and what influence it has on the behavior of your car.

Tires; real science!

Basically, when the car tire rolls, there is a kind of microscopic friction between the rubber and the ground (where the tire “bites” into the ground, as it were), which allows the car to propel forward. Grip is therefore the main factor that determines the quality of response of tires according to their contact with the ground. We are therefore talking about acceleration, cornering, braking and the use of gasoline.

Many factors influence the grip (and therefore the performance potential) of your tyres: for example, the outside temperature, the type of ground, the type of tyre, the level of wear and the pressure (are the tires properly inflated?) all affect grip. The grip of the tire is therefore always changing. This is due to the fact that tire rubber is a material whose nature is permeable and flexible.

What happens under the car

The ideal would be to be able to drive at all times on perfectly smooth ground, without a hitch, with tires as wide as possible and which would never wear out. However, there is no ground and no road without cracks, bumps or cracks, even at a microscopic level.

It is important to remember that the contact patch between a tire and the road is no larger than the palm of your hand, and that the entire mass of the vehicle, including yours and that of your passengers, rests on the tire. compressed air inside the tires. It is therefore a colossal job that is accomplished by a very small space, concentrated under your four tires!
