What should I do when my engine overheats?

Posted June 17, 2024

You’ve probably seen, in old black and white movies, stunts and crazy car chases suddenly ending in clouds of smoke suddenly issuing from the engine of the pursuers’ car. While these stunts are very funny on screen, they are far from being so when they happen to us in “real” life. If your engine ever starts to overheat, don’t panic. Remember these tips and you’ll be on your way before heading to your nearest repair shop.

First solution: stop the engine
The last thing to do when the engine overheats is to continue driving. As soon as possible, stop in a safe place and give the engine time to cool down a bit.

Step Two: Verifications
When you’ve finally stopped, open the hood. Check if your coolant is in sufficient quantity. Then take a look at your radiator. If it does not work, if it is full of dirt or if its small fins are damaged, it will have to be replaced at your garage.

Now look at your fan. This normally activates when your engine gets warm. To tell if your fan is running, run the engine at high speed while it’s still warm. If your fan reacts immediately, your problem is not there. On the other hand, if it does not turn, you will have to replace it.

Other causes of overheating
Engine overheating can be caused by several factors. It can be caused by a fault in the engine temperature gauge or sensor, a faulty water pump impeller, a slipping and overheating transmission or even partially stuck brakes on the wheels. It can also be caused by poor concentration of the coolant, an obstruction in the muffler or in the muffler, insufficient tension of the water pump belt, or even an oil level. too low.

This is why we recommend that you go to your garage to carry out a general inspection of your vehicle. There are many sources of overheating, and your mechanic will know what’s wrong in no time.
